| Relative String Music |
Date: 9/4/1980 Sydney
Label: Fringe Benefit No.29
Track: Side B
Artists: Jon Rose - String Frame and Ship's Piano
Notes: recorded at Dangar Island, Sydney. A metal frame with lots of strings, and a violin bolted to it, some cheap pickups, a volume pedal, and a dilapidated wood-framed half-size ship's piano - Oh I miss that.

Solo Improvisations
front cover
drawing by Kristine Rose
|
| Solo Improvisations |
Date: 11/1/1978 Sydney
Label: Fringe Benefit No.19
Track: Side B
Artists: Jon Rose violin and DJ
Notes: recorded on Dangar Island, Sydney. This is the first solo album. I gave what I thought was my last copy to Otomo Yoshihide to abuse for the Shopping Project of the 1990s. He did this with gusto until one night he left the LP beside a radiator leaving the artefact looking like a Salvador Dali Clock. I thought that was the end of the story until I found this at my father's house. I have given it self-administered turntable treatment after the track is heard in full.

Don't Panic
front cover
collage by Jon Rose
|
| Don't Panic |
Date: 18/4/1981 Sydney
Label: FBR cassette 36
Track: Side A
Artists: Jon Rose - 19 String Cello with electronics
Notes: recorded at a concert in Art:Empire:Industry, Sussex Street, Sydney before an audience of about 40 people and one baby (heard on the recording). This cassette was commercially produced, the master (also a cassette) was lost. I've removed some of the overpowering tape noise. The 19 string cello can be seen here, and at the bottom of this page here. The instrument was amplified in stereo with compression, phasing, and ring modulator heard occasionally. I don't think you could afford to park a car in Sussex street these days, let alone run a venue for experimental music and art.

FBR 25
front cover
generic design for Fringe Benefit Cassettes
|
| FBR 25 |
Date: 10/11/1980 Sydney
Label: FBR cassette 25
Track: Side B
Artists: Jon Rose - 19 String Violin with electronics
Notes: recorded at a concert in The Sydney Studio (now Roslyn Oxley Gallery), Sydney before an audience of about 50 people. This cassette was commercially produced, the master (you guessed it) was lost - as with all Fringe Benefit masters. I've removed some of the tape noise, otherwise it is as is, complete with authentic wow and flutter. The 19 string violin on a frame can be seen here. The instrument was amplified in stereo with occasional compression, phasing, and ring modulator. The instrument was stolen in London a few months later while on tour. I replaced it with the 19 string cello, also stolen!
